🦷 What Is Digestion?
Digestion is the process by which our body breaks down large, insoluble food molecules into small, soluble molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
It involves two stages:
| Type of Digestion | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Mechanical digestion | Physically breaking food into smaller pieces | Chewing (teeth), churning (stomach) |
| Chemical digestion | Breaking down food using enzymes and chemicals | Amylase in saliva breaking starch into sugars |
🧩 Why it’s important: Without digestion, nutrients like glucose, amino acids, and fatty acids can’t enter our cells for energy or growth.
